SHINee's Surprise Vacation (DVD title) or Wonderful Day (TV show title) or One Fine Day if you want to translate it properly, has indeed got too many titles. I'm using the DVD title Surprise Vacation because it makes more sense seen as they went for a week or something.
To sum up, the TV show was sprung on the guys as an idea that they must orchestrate pretty much by themselves. They were given the task of choosing a place they wanted to go and plan their trip, thinking about the things they would most like to do, so it could be filmed as a documentary.
Each member had to decide alone, plan alone, and go without the other members or managers.
A small camera crew would tag along but for the first time the members would each be in charge of their own trip.

The first episode is a sum up of the first few days of the trip as a nice over view to make you want to watch the rest. Then the remaining episodes go into more detail and follow these you guys embarking on journeys they dreamed up with sparkly eyes of wonder and all that jazz.
The boys all kept a travel journal and made a photo book of their experiences during the trip. The production team also made a photo book to accompany the series and I am including two of scans for each member here, 3 for Jonghyun because Jonghyun.
So on to the review. Lets go in age order to follow suit of how they seem to do everything in Korean bands. After a snowy picture of our Maknae.
Onew went to Krabi in Thailand. His holiday was a true vacation from everything at home. He visited the warm beach waters and hot springs, ate in beach side cafes and serenaded his camera crew at every given opportunity to sweet songs in full and treated them to his own cooked food.
Onew is now in my top spot for my choice of pet, I want him to be my new puppy, and his cute pineapple bag too. There is something truly adorkable about that guy.
He really laughs constantly. Eating everything in site, he basically runs around the beach just laughing at monkeys and people and inanimate objects like a crazy person. He goes swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling. But most of all he rests and plays like an work weary man who has been in charge of a hugely popular idol group since 2008 and hasn't had a day off.
He graces us with his fantabulous artistic skills and tricks his way into a clan of beach monkeys. His segments are all smiles and giggles, running around like a little child, excited by everything he sees.
Nothing can quench that childlike humour and freedom, even his heavy work load and responsibilities. Give him one inch of space to play around, and he'll turn the whole surroundings into a play ground. As long as there is food.
Jonghyun decided to go to Japan. Having gained a fan base in Japan so full on that their first tour in Japan was a huge success, Jonghyun felt a loving connection with and strong appreciation for the country.
Not being able to visit anywhere when touring, he wanted to go back for sightseeing. He ran around theme parks, tasting proper street food, and satisfied the absolute nerd in him by visiting various otaku and tourist attractions like the giant geek he is.
Jonghyun also visited Tokyo Dome which of course he has fond memories of from their previous tour.
I'm sure we all have seen the footage from it where he was overcome by emotion after the show - yeah they included all that in this TV show just to tug on our heart strings and make us go all swoony when he talks so sweetly about his memories of touring in Japan.
He gets a little plagued by fans at times but always acts really nicely towards them, even finding some Korean fans to mess around with at some point. The boys chanting SHINee on the Jaws ride was so funny. Cutest reaction to seeing an idol ever. Cutest reaction to fans ever. Too much cutes.
Key decided to go to London. I was screaming at the TV at so many points because he went to all the places where I live and hang out, he was wishing to meet people and there was no one there who wanted to talk to him! I would have Key, I really would have shown you around quite happily.
Key met up with a designer he wanted to work with, visited street stalls, the christmas market on South Bank that I was at that year god damn it, and rode the rollercoaster that I thought I was going to die on. ^^
He followed Minho around, for the short time they were both in the same part of the country, like a lost puppy. He found himself missing the other members and wanted to share his experiences with his friends rather than on his own.
He enjoyed all the food - he chose the best things to eat like proper fish and chips, and afternoon tea, and became obsessed with British Ketchup.
He basically just shopped his way around London being unimpressed with how dreary British people are in real life.
Yes, Key I understand. British people don't look so colourful close up do they.
He felt very on show and out of place walking around looking so fabulous, and I so wished I had bumped into him back then to take him somewhere where interesting people are.
He even treated us to a glimpse into his own home hair salon, dying his hair a peachy colour that looked super cool. I think his quirky sense of humour, fashion, and everything else makes him really interesting to watch.
Minho started off his journey with a tag-along Key in London, but soon moved on to other places around the UK fully utilizing the crapness of the British Railway systems.
Minho did a football tour of the UK, not for one second realising just how sh*t football really is over here, he stared at the stadiums, crowds and players with glittering adoring eyes, the likes of which I have rarely seen on anything other than a puppy with separation anxiety when its owner returns from holiday.
Over joyed to meet the Korean player from whatever the hell team, and even get a high five, he came back with many tales of excitement to tell his fellow members. He had troubles with the floods we had that year stopping all the trains, it really was awful and its a shame that he got caught in it. We all did too Minho, it was sh*tty.
Minho caused a stir online by getting caught on TV at a game and was noticed back home by keen eyed fans. He went ice skating with Key in London and showed off his poise, and chased animals in the parks I WALK IN EVERYDAY DAMN IT. Why didn't I bump into him for christ sake. Seriously.
Taemin got drunk, jumped out of a helicopter to skydive, went skiing, and ate a lot of snow.
He went to Switzerland to prance around and get lost and endlessly travel on the train, and showed his cute childish side rutting up with full on horns against his adventurous mature free spirit.
He came out of it looking like a really strong and respectable person, who has a lot more to offer than his cutesy image in SHINee.
On the cusp of releasing his first solo album all grown up and naked on the promo material, its fitting to watch this show, and look back to see his progression from that tiny little mischievous kitten in Hello Baby to the daring but calm and composed person we see in Surprise Vacation.
Taemin's segment is full of lovely wistful shots of him looking at snow - gorgeous, and his thoughtful musings on his life in SHINee, but also not losing any of that playful behaviour we know. As I say, much snow was eaten.
So that's about it. Loved every second of it.
Really so much fun from start to finish. It a well constructed show with perfect balance between all their stupids and super feels.
One of the best idol reality shows I've seen.
Flawless hair and faces, no matter how puffy they think their eyes are in the morning. A lovely insight into the way they see themselves and each other, and a nice excuse for them to have a well deserved holiday. Albeit with cameras and schedules looming over their shoulders still.
Still, as usual, they prove themselves to be worth watching. They don't seem to mind showing all their nerdy stupids and geeky fun to help you remember that Jonghyun's backless leather jacket from Lucifer MV and the furrows of super serial hard core rap action stretched across Minho's face are not really telling of their true personalities. They are giggly starry eyed weirdoes who should definitely CALL ME when they are in London damn it.
