so how cute can one hyperactive, easily distracted, loud, exitable, food orientated, loyal labrador puppy be? very. especially if that labrador pup is kamenashi kazuya playing a boxer in love with a nun. *eeeh?* i cant help but see him as a desperate-to-please black lab with eyes only for his owner and his meals since watching one pound gospel.
i loved this drama series. it was so cackle out loud funny, adorable and ridiculous that i cant help but revisit it periodically.
i loved the little connections back to the manga like when angela reads the actual gospel comics at one point.
i had seen kamenashi in gokusen, nobuta, suppli, yuuki, and tatta hitotsu no koi -all fairly straight roles compared to his character kosaku in 1pound gospel. it was obvious that he could be funny from dry comedic moments in gokusen, nobuta and suppli but gospel is more over the top anime style humour involving lots of running, shouting, running while shouting, and looking like a exitable puppy throughout. i suppose it follows on from suppli where he was fairly silly a lot of the time but in gospel his character is pretty dumb and hyped up on nun love which apparantly is enough to win the toughest of trials.
he falls for sister angela head over boxing gloves, confessing at every opportunity. i spent most of the time shouting at the the screen "she's a nun you idiot!" but kind of loving the fact he didnt seem to get that she cant have a boyfriend.
as you would, if kamenashi was chasing you around the park all the time shouting his love at the top of his voice, sister angela (kuroki meisa) starts to buckle to his charm. or stupidity. or constant hounding - lets just call it what it is. kuroki finally plays a character i like for a change, sister angela is frought with confusion and repression - often finding herself encouraging him without knowing why. kuroki is very funny in this role pulling some great expressions and coming out with some brilliant lines.
all the supporting cast are pretty funny, the nuns and mother superior (played by the wonderful motai masako) especially.
the training gym houses a bunch of fellow boxers trying to better themselves and a manager working hard to keep them all at it. the main problem, from before sister angela was even in the picture, is kosaku's ridiculous appetite. being a boxer he has a weight restriction but he is constantly giving in to his hunger in the most stupid ways only to have to then crash diet before a match.
kamenashi gets to be pretty slapstick, over the top and just plain bonkers through most of this series with his actions bordering on stalking at points. adorably sweet and naive kosaku doesnt really have a clue how much of an idiot he is and continues to fight for her love despite her rejections and everyones efforts to explain that SHE IS A NUN!
this role was perfect for kamenashi - i kind of imagine him to have that sort of oblivious innocence with people - not realising that boys dont generally
hold hands with each other and that kind of thing - which we heard on cartoon kat-tun
maybe im assuming too much but its all besides the point anyway.
he was very cute, shouty and fun as kosaku. he made gospel such great fun to watch and he makes you root for him all the way to the end.
damn it just writing about gospel made me hungry and go make somen.
