The GREAT Seo tai ji Symphony with Tolga Kashif & Royal Phillharmonic

the president of culture maxed me out again

this is a live concert with seo tai ji - probably the most influencial artist in korea,
and tolga kashif conducting the royal phillharmonic orchestra.

hearing about this combination of artists was unbelievably exiting
and i managed to track down this show after a little while -
when i finally set aside a time to watch it, as i expected, i spent
most of the time teary eyed and speachless.

to have an artist who is so gifted
and a band who write music aready on such an epic scale
merge with the fantastic royal phillharmonic... well i knew it would be the best
collaboration i could hope for.

i dont think jeong hyeon-cheol couldve looked any cuter but then he
always looks stunning. the whole band looked fab. and sounded perfect.
as you would expect.
~

the concert starts off with take one, not before tolga kashif has introduced the
orchestra and recieved a huge ovation from the audience - much deserved.

it was clearly take one's melodies and motifs and had
beautiful harp moments and an intense string swells, but what a strong yet tonally soft
version on this already awesome tune. it is just the orchestra for a while
which is lovely to watch and listen to and as it rises to a cressendo i feel like i could burst.

when it kicks in and the back opens up to show that beautiful man stood in the smoke
with that brilliant and familiar guitar riff breathing out into the air waves
the crowd goes nuts as i would have done. it brought tears to my eyes and
i became completely squealy and got all goosebumps etc.

the band are lit up with that opening chord and as they play on
they sound absolutely perfect.

there are prerecorded layers behind and their live playing over the top
- the same with the vocals, which i find makes an awesome sound.
you still get to hear the reality of the artists live performance but you also get
the perfect production of all the harmonies and extra layers that you hear
on the albums.

jeong hyeon-cheol's singing by the way is as pitch perfect and flexable as
it always is. his control and tone is always spot on.

he comes down the stage for take two - walking about and looking generally beautiful,
shouts and screams and jumps around like a loon with the band for a bit and
later sits down to sing a really slow version on moai from the 8th atmos album,
which is absolutely stunning.

my favourite point of the show is t'ik t'ak.
t'ik t'ak on the piano = tears - floods of tears from me.
it is completely recognisable as the pianist begins and the orchestra softly play behind.
it fades down and i think that was beautiful - then out comes the choir and i realise
its gonna come back in with the band any second.

t'ik t'ak starts up again in an epic way with that same intro as the usual version on
8th atmos but with the most dramatic backing from the orchestra and choir,
the band really go nuts for this one.
this is only half way through and theyve already brought the pyros out,
the keyboard player is going mental on his bendy synth stand
and the drummer cant sit on his seat with the force with which he hits his drums.

then comes heffy end, which is epic enough on its own - it sits perfectly with
an orchestra. he has such a beautiful voice that you can hear perfectly
on those quiet bits at the bridge.
and then with those heavy breaks i think the synth guy is going for it so much he's
gonna injure himself. he rocks.

another couple of tunes then jeong hyeon-cheol's starts talking to the
audience for a bit being generally smiley and adorable while still looking like the
calm and composed genius that he is.

later when come back home starts really nice and slow
the guys look ready to go nuts again and as it builds the suspense is killing me -
i would have died if i was in that crowd.
its probably the most influencial seo tai ji song and it still had the same power it here
as it ever did.

the orchestra plays alot on its own before the band comes in again which is nice -
they dont just back the tunes, theyve reworked the tunes into orchestra pieces
then bring the origonal elemnts back in over the top

ah then he comes out in his hat - looking fab.
when they finish i just wished it couldve gone on for much longer and wonder
if i could get away with shooting it straight back to the beginning to watch again.

have a still from a seo tai ji music video that is on the end of the dvd
they really are awesome.
