chaos カオス [movie]

Definitely doesn’t do exactly what it says on the tin

I’m writing this review basically for the sole reason that the blurb on the dvd doesn’t match the film at all. I want to give a little more accurate description for those who may be turned off this movie by its useless synopsis.

I will quote the blurb and re-explain it correctly, bit by terrible bit.

“To dispel doubts about her husband’s fidelity a woman stages her own kidnapping.” First line isn’t too bad I guess. “To ensure the kidnapping’s plausibility she forces the hired henchman to tie her up.” – no, what actually happens is she hires a plumber to kidnap her and he suggests the various things they need to do to make it realistic; tie her up and let the fish die (that’ll make sense if you watch it).

“When the kidnapping evolves into a perverse, erotic role-playing game –” uh, when does that happen then? At one point, when he ties her up, he scares the sh*t out of her when he threatens to assault her for real – but not only is there a perfectly relevant reason for that, she quite rationally freaks out about it. I’ll continue on from where I was…

“When the kidnapping evolves into a perverse, erotic role-playing game between the consensual abductor and abductee, the two discover a mutual interest in masochism and bondage.” Nope. Didn’t happen. None of that. No idea where they got that from. They flirt a bit. Absolutely f*ck all to do with bondage mate.

“things are not as simple as they seem. Has –” ok, I’m not to say any of the next bit as it spoils the whole movie by telling you exactly what happens, it really is a terrible synopsis. What I would have said next is that the movie is far more about what happens after the kidnapping is over and the plumber is trying to find out just who the f*ck that woman was. There is a very strange connection that developed between the two but it isn’t clear what it is. There are so many twists of betrayal and misleading manipulation that it is confusing to the audience not just the panicked plumber mixed up in her world of chaos.

The two main characters do have an odd, almost adrenaline based, attraction to each other – but I think it isn’t really the point of the movie it is just the cause of things spiralling on long after they could have ended. Their liking for each other is not the complete point – it is also the dark circumstances that came out of the abduction and the unclear events that led up to it in the first place that makes them intrigued enough with one another to keep them playing the cat and mouse game after the disastrous kidnapping is over. *breathe! – no commas – dear god – where did my punctuation disappear to..?*

Ok, so that is my rant about the blurb.

I like the film in general, it is a bit weird, slightly gritty feeling, and nicely shot. But it isn’t one of my favourites. I like that it doesn’t really explain itself very well in terms of what is going on in the minds of the characters, it is echoing the messy nature of the mental states of those involved.

Chaos is directed by Nakata Hideo (ringu) so you know it isn’t going to be terrible. I feel like it is a little dated somehow though. It really isn’t that old a film but that is just the thing I get from it. I do think it is worth ignoring the dvd plot-synop because thankfully it is nothing like its description and it is a good movie with a traditional thriller genre story and style.

Cast:
Kuroda (the plumber) – Hagiwara Masato (akihabaradeep movie)
Satomi/Saori (the wife) – Nakatani Miki (ringu trilogy)
Komiyama (the husband) – Mitsuishi Ken (20th century boys)
Police Inspector – Kunimura Jun (ichi the killer, audition)

With that cast it really is a relatively safe bet that it isn’t going to be a bad film. I suppose it depends what you are looking for from this movie. I assure you, if you really want to see this perverse, erotic role-playing game with masochism and bondage sh*t that the blurb implies, you might want to find something else to satisfy. Or maybe check yourself a little bit. And watch something nicer.

she looks great when she's all dishevelled.
