Immortal Songs 2 불후의 명곡 2 [TV show]

Its a great premise for a show. We should steal it.

I believe this used to be a section in another show called Saturday Freedom, but now is a stand alone variety show musical competition. Celebrities compete against each other, voted by the audience for the best performance.

The format slightly changes depending on the style of the particular show but usually there is one legend sat in the viewing box in the audience who reviews each performance.

Those performances are covers of that legend's songs and it is lovely to hear new revamped experimental versions of old trot, rock or ballads.

Some times they will have teams but usually just compete for themselves against each other. The battle continues until everyone has performed, knocking out one by one as each celebrity goes head to head.

Usually it will feature members of bands, idols, and sometimes whole bands and duos but in some of the specially themed episodes it will feature comedians and sports personalities too.

I have watched quite a few of these now, you can see pretty much all of them on youtube. The host is the brilliant Maknae Rebellion's Shin Dong Yeop, also joined by Moon Heejun and Eun Jiwon in the green room with the stars waiting to perform.

I loved watching Gummy and Kim Jongseo's performances when they went head to head and broke the record for high points again and again.

It was argued that Seo Taiji's idol Kin Jongseo should have been in the legend's box but he was determined that he should be performing along side the likes of Taemin from SHINee and Niel from Teen Top, both maknaes of each band, as he still had much to learn from all types of performers.

I thought that was very respectable but maybe not completely true as you can see by how he smashed it.

Actually that remains to be my favourite episode. Gummy's performance brought me tears, it was so moving, and almost everyone else was such fun and inventive that there wasnt a dull moment.

Some episodes can get a little long if they have too many of the same style performers, which I think they try to limit.

It is generally a really good show to have on in the background; every now and then something pricks your ears up and you become glued to a hypnotising performance by someone you never expected to see be so experimental with an old song.

It is a show you can watch regardless of who you know and what you have seen before, but it makes it all the more fun when you know most of the people involved. Even if you dont, this is quite a good way to be introduced to the funny personalities and amazing talents of some of Korea's best performers.
